From 9.-13. October 2017, we held our first DynAMo Workshop in Ushuaia. Thanks to the excellent support provided by Gustavo Ferreyra, Irene Schloss and numerous helpers the Workshop could take place at the CADIC institute, where we met perfect conditions for a meeting located right at the Beagle Channel. Among the 40 participants from Argentina, Chile, Germany and the USA we were able to welcome several representatives from science/academia, politics and the Argentinean Navy.
Main goal of the meeting was to strengthen the strategic planning of the project. For this purpose, the project has been divided into three work packages, first scientific collaborations were arranged, as well as mid- and long-term goals defined. First conceptual ideas were discussed on how to best establish an observation network for the terrestrial as well as the marine part of the Beagle Channel. An important aspect of the project, right from the start, is to include all relevant stakeholders (politics, citizens, fishermen, scientists, tourism etc.) into the project.
Throughout the Workshop participants were given the possibility for a guided catamaran tour on the Beagle Channel to gain a first personal impression of this very unique place. Furthermore, the Argentinean Navy kindly provided us with the opportunity to visit the Argentinean research ice breaker ARA Almirante Irízar in the harbour of Ushuaia.
